90 kilometers of diverse experiences with every single step The Minett Trail stages

Answer natures call

From Clemency to Dudelange or to Bettembourg, the Minett region offers an exceptional hike through the heart of the Land of the Red Rocks: the Minett Trail. Stretching for 90 km in length and clearly marked, this is a trail for seasoned hikers. It can be broken down into several stages, depending on your preferences and physical condition.

During the hike itself, you will be guided through many of this region’s typical landscapes: open-pit iron mines (most notably the “Prënzebierg – Giele Botter”), woodland areas, the Fond-de-Gras (a valley dotted with numerous mining tunnels), the nature reserve of “Haard-Hesselsbierg-Staebierg” in Dudelange, the new urban district in Belval, the towns of Pétange and Dudelange, etc.

After a day of hiking, you’ll be able to rest and stay overnight in one of the “Kabaisercher”, entirely renovated cabins built in various surprising locations, specifically for hikers. To make the most of these exceptional rest stops, don’t forget to book in advance!

You can, of course, bring your four-legged friend on the Minett Trail. However, you will need to keep your pet on a leash to avoid disturbing the surrounding nature, particularly nesting birds. Our main goal is to get as many people as possible to enjoy our wonderful region, while always respecting the environment!

Choose your path

No matter where you're starting from or where you're headed: The Minett Trail has a perfect stage for you. Impossible to choose your path unwisely, though it is best to stay with a distance and difficulty profile you feel confident about. Several different stages are available for your visit, and in total 90 kilometers, subdivided into 10 different routes, will guide you through the entire Minett region. All of them are fully signposted in both directions and will lead you from one train station to the next.

A cross-border experience

Not only the Minett region underwent large changes during the mining exploitation years. A similar development took place on the other side of the border in France. Both regions therefore have created a new common link: The "Circuit Transfrontalier de l'Acier".
Discover how closely the history of both regions is connected on this 22-kilometer circular hiking trail; This cross-border trail was designed in collaboration with the "Communauté de communes du Pays Haut Val d'Alzette" (CCPHVA) and leads in a loop through the former mining areas of both countries.

On the Luxembourg side, the path leads between Belvaux to Esch-sur-Alzette and through the "Ellergronn" nature reserve over part of the "Minett Trail". On the way, the path also leads past the Belval district with its impressive blast furnaces. Here, at a height of almost 40 meters, you can catch a glimpse of a large part of the region. On this side of the border, you will therefore discover the history of the transport chain and the processing of the steel.

On the other side of the border,  it is all about the mining of the precious ore itself; the path leads through Audun-le-Tiche, where you can visit an archeology museum, through an extensive forest area in the former mining area and on to the small border village of Rédange. On this trail, you can discover how closely the two regions are connected.
