90 kilometers of diverse experiences with every single step The Minett Trail stages

Answer natures call

From Clemency to Dudelange or Bettembourg, the Minett region offers an exceptional hike in the heart of the Land of the Red Rocks: the Minett Trail. Stretching for 90 km in length and clearly marked, this is a trail for seasoned hikers. It can be broken down into several stages, depending on your preferences and physical condition.

After a day of hiking, you’ll soon be able to rest and stay overnight in one of the “Kabaisercher”, entirely renovated cabins built in various surprising locations, specifically for hikers. To make the most of these exceptional rest stops, don’t forget to book in advance!

During the hike itself, you will be guided through many of this region’s typical landscapes: open-pit iron mines (most notably the “Prënzebierg – Giele Botter”), woodland areas, the Fond de Gras (a valley dotted with numerous mining tunnels), the nature reserve of “Haard-Hesselsbierg-Staebierg” in Dudelange, the new urban district in Belval, the towns of Pétange and Dudelange, etc.

You can, of course, bring your four-legged friend on the Minett Trail. However, you will need to keep your pet on a leash to avoid disturbing the surrounding nature, particularly nesting birds. Our main goal is to get as many people as possible to enjoy our wonderful region, while staying respectful of the environment!

Clemency - Pétange Gare

On this stretch of route, you walk between the two train stations of Pétange and Clemency. Admittedly, although trains no longer come into Clemency at the old station, the building has been converted into an inn where you can relax from the exertion of the trail. This section is a good start to the 90-kilometer route of the Minett Trail. On the way you walk through a shady forest, which relieves you of the hardships of the path. You might even stop at the pond along the route, which is always good for a surprise. Meanwhile, in Pétange, a well-kept park awaits you, through which you can hike on the Minett Trail.

Pétange Gare - Differdange Gare

On this section you hike through the Prënzebierg - Giele Botter nature reserve, through the Fond-de-Gras and through the sleepy little village of Lasauvage, which lies directly on the French border. You walk through dense forests and renatured mining areas and can discover how nature has reclaimed the landscape.

On the route you will discover many remnants of the eventful past in the mining area: sections of the route of the former "Bremswee" of the "Buggies" for example - those lorries with which the precious ore was transported away from the mining area. In the Prënzebierg - Giele Botter area you can admire man-made terraces where quarrying dug deep into the rock. You might even discover the tunnel entrance, which is inhabited by bats nowadays. The path is otherwise richly filled with old witnesses of the industrial past: electricity pylons, remains of a rail network and more. From the village of Lausauvage in the direction of Differdange, the path also leads along the "Crosnière" stream.

Differdange Gare - Belvaux-Rédange Gare

On this section you hike through the nature reserve "Kiemerchen- Scheiergronn- Groussebësch", which borders on the "Gaalgebierg" of Belvaux. On the way you will also see red rock formations and traces of ore mining. Part of the way leads over an old iron ore transport route, which today looks like an abandoned highway passage. Here, nature reclaims its place steadily. The path leads almost exclusively through an extensive forest area.

On this section you walk through the new district of Belval, which has been developing rapidly for almost ten years. The former industrial wasteland was made habitable  again with enormous efforts; since then, the district has been filled with new life. Whether as a cultural center (with the "Rockhal"), for research or studies and sciences (Belval is the location of the University of Luxembourg, which is also very young) or leisure, the location is a prime example of successful revalorisation. The section between the new Belval district and the train station in Esch-sur-Alzette is also completely barrier-free and can be recommended as an alternative route for people with reduced mobility. On the way in Esch-sur-Alzette you will also pass the longest shopping street in Luxembourg, which consists of almost 2 kilometers of pure pedestrian zone.

Esch-sur-Alzette Gare - Tétange Gare

On this section you hike through the "Ellergronn" nature reserve and just barely miss the "Leiffrächen" nature reserve. The path also leads past the National Miners' Monument in Kayl. In both mining areas, nature has reclaimed the area, and where barren landscapes once dominated, dense forests and bird sanctuaries are now blooming.

There are plenty of forests here, and pure nature: the path also starts in the Gaalgebierg Park in Esch, known for its rose beds. At the Animal Park on the Gaalgebierg, which is just a short distance away, you can explore the animal world (the visit is free) and you can take a short break in the "Bamhauscafé". It is mystical on the "Leiffrächen", because the nature reserve is named after the pilgrimage site of the same name (the path leads past the chapel) of the patron saint of miners.

Tétange Gare - Rumelange Gare

On this section you walk through the "Leiffrächen" nature reserve and the hollowed-out area around the border town of Rumelange. Close to the French border, you are in the middle of the mining area and can see how much nature has changed as a result of mining and the necessary infrastructure.

The path leads past the "Monument National des Mineurs" in Kayl, which commemorates the miners who died. On the "Leiffrächen", named after the place of pilgrimage of the same name and the chapel next to the path - the patron saint of the miners - you will find the distinctive red soil typical of the region. In front of the National Mining Museum in Rumelange you can see an old, decommissioned mine train.

Rumelange Gare - Dudelange Gare

On this section you walk through the huge "Haard - Hesselsbierg - Staebierg" nature reserve; massive boulders, red rock faces and dense forests dominate this former lunar landscape. For decades, the precious "Minette" ore was mined here, which made an essential contribution to the economic development of the country from the beginning of the 20th century until the late 1980s.

In the nature reserve, the path leads past the longest connected rock face in Europe, which also stands out due to its distinctive red colour. Together with the exceptional biodiversity and nature in the "Haard-Hesselsbierg-Staebierg" nature reserve, this is the strength of this section.

At the start in Rumelange you will also find the Musée National des Mines, where you can take a guided tour of the tunnels. There are also other contemporary witnesses of the industrial past along the way: a train waggon used for dumping the slag (the "Humpen") and a view of the former industrial area in Dudelange on arrival down from the nature reserve - with a view of the old water tower - clearly stand out here.

Esch-sur-Alzette Gare - Schifflange Gare

On this section you hike between the towns of Esch-sur-Alzette and Schifflange through the nature reserve  "Lalléngerbierg - Brucherbierg" and thus through an important piece of history that has strongly shaped the region and both towns.

This stage is particularly rich in contrasts; on the one hand you walk through barren lunar landscapes with the distinctive red soil. Then again the path leads through lush, green forests, and with a bit of luck you will find the source of the "Marxeweiher" near Schifflange. The path is also very varied and it offers deep insights into the ever-changing region. Just a short detour away from the path in the direction of the "Kabaischen" in Schifflange, it offers you a view over the new Belval district, for example.

Schifflange Gare - Bergem / Beim Nëssert

On this section you hike through the unique water and bird sanctuary "Dumontshaff", which as a Natura 2000 nature reserve offers a habitat for several species. Here you can take a closer look at the diversity of the Alzette valley and the course of the river, and with a bit of luck you can watch storks or lapwings breeding. You might even catch a glimpse of the water buffaloes grazing here - as long as they're not currently hiding from prying eyes. The wetland area you walk across has a boarded over footpath over to protect nature while still allowing you access.

Bergem/Beim Nëssert - Gare Bettembourg

On this section you walk through the nature reserve "Beetebuerger Bësch" and further through the rural south of Luxembourg between Bergem and its cultural center "Beim  Nëssert" and the train station of Bettembourg. On the way you will not find the characteristic red soil of the region, but you will find plenty of nature - in a short distance from the capital.

In the "Beetebuerger Bësch" you will find, for example, several small ponds that make the area very varied. The course of the Minett Trail also leads you through many small, picturesque villages in the countryside, which are a good contrast to the rest of the Luxembourg south, which is more densely populated away from the nature reserves.

Choose your path

No matter where you're starting from or where you're headed: The Minett Trail has a perfect stage for you. Impossible to choose your path unwisely, though it is best to stay with a distance and difficulty profile you feel confident about. Several different stages are available for your visit, and in total 90 kilometers, subdivided into 10 different routes, will guide you through the entire Minett region. All of them are fully signposted in both directions and will lead you from one train station to the next.

A cross-border experience

Not only the Minett region underwent large changes during the mining exploitation years. A similar development to the changes in landscape took place on the other side of the border in France. Both regions therefore have created a new common link: The "Circuit Transfrontalier de l'Acier".
Discover how closely the history of both regions is connected on this 22-kilometer circular hiking trail; This cross-border trail was designed in collaboration with the "Communauté de communes du Pays Haut Val d'Alzette" (CCPHVA) and leads in a loop through the former mining areas of both countries.

On the Luxembourg side, the path leads between Belvaux to Esch-sur-Alzette and through the "Ellergronn" nature reserve over part of the "Minett Trail". On the way, the path also leads past the Belval district with its impressive blast furnaces. Here, at a height of almost 40 meters, you can catch a glimpse of a large part of the region. On this side of the border, you will therefore discover the history of the transport chain and the processing of the steel.

On the other side of the border,  it is all about the mining of the precious ore itself; the path leads through Audun-le-Tiche, where you can visit an archeology museum, through an extensive forest area in the former mining area and on to the small border village of Rédange. On this trail, you can discover how closely the two regions are connected.
