THE SOUND OF DATA
'The Sound of Data' is a project about transforming scientific data into music. It explores new ways of creating, performing, and experiencing music and art by using multi-source data as the building blocks in the creative process, i.e. remixing scientific and artistic approaches. It is centered around the idea of using datasets obtained in different contexts as a core determinant of a musical composition.
The project is articulated in 4 phases, showing how data can be collected (phase 1), processed and translated/sonified (phase 2) and ultimately used to compose, arrange and produce music in studio setups, artists residencies (phase 3) and for live performance (phase 4). The concept will be applied to 4 different datasets (traffic data, historical data, data from crowd sourcing art as well as 3D body scan data) to explore topics with high societal relevance for the focus area and to address the artistic headlines of Esch2022 as outlined above. Tangible project outputs (published music, etc.) as well as a training programme for musicians and scientists will support the development and propagation of this art form in the Esch22 region beyond 2022.
